Softball splits doubleheader with Mountaineers

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre softball earned a big 13-3 win, the team's first of the season to open a Saturday doubleheader with visiting Berea before falling 5-8 in the second contest.  

GAME ONE: Centre 13, Berea 3 

- Freshman Aleiah Branin got the offense started with a leadoff single to open the bottom half of the first inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, an error by the right fielder scored Branin. 
- The second frame saw the most runs in an inning by the Colonels all season. An error plated Kennedy Caudill who moved to third on a double by Caroline Unruh. Caudill then scored thanks to a passed ball followed by Unruh scoring on a wild pitch. 
- Emily Lammers scored next after walking and then a single from Jada Challiss single followed by a double from Cheney Floyd. A walk, a wild pitch, a hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly from Morgan Tabor combined to send four more Centre runners home. 
- Rylee Sandifer was next to score in the bottom of the second when she stole home. That was followed by the final score of the inning while was an RBI single from Emily Lammers
- The third frame saw three more Colonels come home. A two RBI double from tabor and an RBI single from Caudill padded the Centre lead to 12-0. 
- Berea scored a single run in the fourth to avoid the shutout. 
- Izzy Rushing had the final RBI for the Colonels with her double scoring Floyd in the bottom of the fourth. 
- The Mountaineers scored two in the fifth but could not come back in the 13-3 run-rule win for Centre. 
- Nine Colonels registered a hit with Floyd leading the way with two. Tabor led in RBI with three in the contest. 
- Kennedy Caudill earned her first collegiate win in the circle. She hurled for four complete innings and allowed no earned runs and just one hit. She struck out three batters. 
- Ashley Howard saw an inning of work and stuck out one batter. 


GAME TWO: Berea 8, Centre 5 

- It was Berea who had the hot start in the second contest of the day. The Mountaineers put up seven total runs between the first and second innings.  
- Centre got on the board in the third frame after a sacrifice fly from Sandifer scored Branin who was on third thanks to a triple. 
- Another two runs were scored by the Colonels in the fourth inning as the squad attempted a comeback. A Layne Ogle double, a walk, and a wild pitch put two Centre runners in scoring position. The Mountaineers then committed an error at first which brought two Colonels across home and cut the lead to 7-3. 
- Centre cut the lead even more in the sixth inning. Rushing scored on a pop up after reaching on a single and then a sacrifice fly scored a pinch running Sarah Bradley who took the place of Regan Brownley who hit a single. 
- The comeback fell short as a final run from Berea in the seventh secured the 8-5 win for the visiting team. 
- Layne Ogle was immediately moved from the designated player to the circle and pitched one inning. Madison Mullender came in next and pitched a third of an inning. Kennedy Caudill threw the last five and two thirds innings for the Colonels and allowed no earned runs on three hits and struck three out. 

UP NEXT  
Centre hosts Wilmington for a Saturday doubleheader in a week. First pitch of the first contest is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.
