DANVILLE, Ky.- On Saturday morning, the Centre women's lacrosse team returned to South Turf to host Capital. Battling both the elements and the Comets, the Colonels suffered a 17-13 loss, moving to a 4-4 record.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels dominated in the early minutes of the contest, opening with a 4-1 run to take the early lead.
Addie Lewis initiated the game with an assisted goal four minutes in. Less than a minute later,
Haley Rice found the back of the net that was followed by the Comets' first point of the game. Rice added another point with the help of
Audrey Haines before Lewis closed the Colonels' early run with an unassisted score. In the final eight minutes minutes of the quarter, each squad put up three additional points.
Ellie Macdonald and
Catherine Zeek netted woman-up goals while
Gracie Garner needed no help on her goal. Entering the next period, the Colonels led 7-4.
- The two teams continued to trade goals for much of the second quarter, Capital opening the period and Lewis answering during a woman-up opportunity. In the final five minutes of the half, the Comets caught traction, outscoring the Colonels 5-1. Entering halftime, Capital held a one-point lead, the score reading 11-10.
- The Comets carried their momentum into the second half, outscoring Centre 5-2 in the frame. Rice owned both of the Colonels' points, opening the half with a woman-up goal. Capital rattled off three unanswered points before the senior would score again. The Comets added two more points to the board before the end of the third, moving the score to 16-12 entering the final period.
- The fourth quarter was cut short due to weather. Before the game was indefinitely suspended, each team found the back of the net, Garner giving Centre their final point. At the conclusion of the contest, the Comets led 17-13.
INSIDE THE BOX SCOR
- Rice led Centre offensively with five goals and one assist. Lewis secured a hat-trick while Garner netted two.
- Macdonald led the Colonels in ground balls with four.
- In goal,
Mary Haley saved seven and led Centre to 14-17 clears.
- The Colonels favored 16-15 in ground balls.
