Maryville unkind to Colonel softball

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Centre softball was on the wrong end of two results versus future Southern Athletic Association opponent Maryville College on Monday.

The Colonels fell 14-6 in the opening game of the twin bill and 5-1 in the finale of the DH.

GAME ONE: Maryville 14, Centre 6

- The first few innings of action were not kind to the visiting team. Centre went three up and down in each of the first three innings while the Scots put up 10 runs across that time.
- It was the fourth inning when the Colonels' offense came alive. Aleiah Branin was hit by a pitch to start the frame and then found herself on second after a steal and with two outs on the board. What followed next was five consecutive singles with the hits from Morgan Tabor, Layne Ogle, and Cheney Floyd earning one RBI each.
- An error in left field was the next play in the fourth to score a Centre runner. Kennedy Caudill followed that with a two RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 10-6.
- The Colonels saw hits in the fifth, a double from Tabor and a single from Emily Lammers, but no runners came home.
- Unfortunately for the Gold & White, Maryville tacked on four runs in the fifth frame to secure a 14-6 run-rule win.
- Caudill started in the circle for Centre and went three innings. Ogle came in for the final one and two thirds innings.
- Tabor and Lammers led the Colonel effort with two hits each while Caudill had a team-leading two RBI.

GAME TWO: Maryville 5, Centre 1

- The Scots again jumped out to an early lead. This time it was thanks to an error that scored one in the bottom of the first.
- Centre answered back in the top of the third frame. Caudill walked to start the inning and then Branin hit a sacrifice bunt to move Caudill to second. A throwing error by the pitcher then sent the Colonel runner home to even up the contest 1-1
- Maryville rallied back to the lead with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings scoring to build a 5-1 advantage.
- Madalyn Irwin started the comeback attempt for the Gold & White with a single in the top of the seventh with two outs already on the board. Ogle then reached first on a fielders choice, while Irwin made it to third on an error by the shortstop. Unfortunately, the lead held for the Scots n the two game sweep for the home team.
- Ashley Howard went a complete six innings in her pitching effort. She struck out one batter.
