DEMOREST, Ga. – The Centre softball team went down to Georgia for the second doubleheader of spring break and saw two setbacks to Piedmont University.
The first game saw the Colonels fall 8-0, while the second contest was a 9-1 setback for the visiting team.
GAME ONE: Piedmont 8, Centre 0
- The Gold & White were the first to land a runner on base in the doubleheader.
Morgan Tabor walked in the first inning to earn that designation.
- Piedmont scored a solo run in the bottom of the first frame to go up early.
Emily Lammers locked down the first hit of the game for Centre in the next frame, but no runners came home.
- A single run in the second inning and three in the third helped the home team go up 5-0.
- Only two more hits came for the Colonels, with both happening in the top of the sixth.
Madalyn Irwin hit a single to short with two outs on the board in hopes of making a comeback. Tabor then followed with a single of her own. The offense stalled with the out that followed and the Lions tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the run-rule victory.
-
Ashley Howard started in the circle for Centre and hurled for four and one third innings. She struck out two in her time out for the Colonels.
Madison Mullender was the Centre pitcher for the final two thirds of an inning of the contest.
GAME TWO: Piedmont 9, Centre 1
- The Lions took a commanding 5-0 lead by the end of the second inning leaving the Gold & White fighting an uphill battle.
- Centre had a hit to open the second, a double from Tabor, but did not see a run score until the top of the third. A
Cheney Floyd double plated the junior who then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Aleiah Branin. An error that followed a
Caroline Unruh walk sent Floyd home.
- The Colonel bats seemed to stall as Piedmont kept offense up and added four more runs to end the game early with a 9-1 run-rule decision.
-
Kennedy Caudill hurled five complete innings for the Gold & White.
Katherine Weller was in the circle for the final third of an inning.
