Centre drops softball doubleheader to Maryville

DANVILLE, Ky. – With the regular season winding down, Centre softball played a Sunday non-conference doubleheader against the Maryville Scots. The Colonels dropped both games, losing 8-3 in the opener before a heartbreaking 11-5 loss in extra innings in the second game.

Game 1: Maryville 8, Centre 3

- Maryville quickly got on the board as the Scots scored twice in the first inning thanks to four Centre walks.
- The Scots tacked on five more in the third on an error, a walk, two singles and two doubles as Maryville raced to a 7-0 lead.
- Centre put two runners on in the bottom of the third as Myah Fletcher singled and Morgan Tabor walked. With two outs, Layne Ogle delivered a clutch base hit to put the first two runs on the board for the Colonels.
- Maryville got a run back in the fifth after a two-base error and a two-out single made it 8-2.
- In the sixth, Cheney Floyd led off with a base hit, eventually winding up on third with two outs. Fletcher delivered her second hit of the game to score Floyd and make it an 8-3 game, but the Scots finished off the game with a 6-3 double play in the seventh.

Game 2: Maryville 11, Centre 5 (11 innings)

- The opening innings belonged to the pitchers as Ashley Howard kept the Scots at bay. Maryville finally got on the board in the fourth after a pair of Centre errors.
- Centre answered back in the bottom of the fourth, putting runners on the corners after a double by Ogle and a bunt single by Floyd. Caroline Unruh hit one into the 5.5 hole for a base hit to tie the game.
- The game remained tied into extra innings. In the eighth, with a runner placed on second, a leadoff triple gave Maryville the lead and the Scots tacked on another run for the first earned run given up by Howard all day.
- Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Aleiah Branin began the inning on second and scored on a double from Tabor. The tying run was on third with two outs and Ogle came through in the clutch with a shot up the middle to score pinch runner Sarah Bradley and keep the game alive.
- After both teams missed out on golden scoring opportunities in the ninth, Maryville utilized three straight singles and a sac fly to take a 5-3 lead in the tenth.
- In Centre's half of the tenth, Fletcher was placed on second and Branin extended the game with one swing of the bat, uncorking a two-run homer to tie the game yet again.
- The Scots broke things open in the 11th with six hits in the inning, resulting in six runs. Centre's comeback magic ran out as the Colonels went down in order in the 11th.
