Danville, KY - Centre Women's Tennis entered Wednesday's match against Asbury off a tough weekend defeat to Sewanee. The Colonels showed fight and resilience to grind out a 4-2 win over the Eagles to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Colonels dominated the doubles action to start the day. The #2 doubles team of
Grace Williams and
Carlie Mitchell rolled to a 6-1 win. Third doubles proved even better as
Sara Dunn and
Shelby Franklin cruised to a 6-0 win as the Colonels clinched the doubles point in just under 30 minutes. With the team point clinched, the #1 doubles match featuring
Natalie Black and
Kennedy Herring was abandoned with the Colonels trailing, 2-3.
Singles action proved much tougher for the Colonels.
Grace Williams dropped #1 singles, 1-6, 6-3.
Kennedy Herring looked in trouble after losing the first set of #2 singles, 4-6. Herring dug deep and flipped the match upside down, rebounding to win 6-1, 6-3 over the final two sets to claim the win.
Carlie Mitchell claimed the first singles point of the day in third singles with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 triumph.
With a 2-1 overall lead heading to 4th singles,
Olivia Watson got off to a slow start by losing set 1, 2-6. She used the set break to compose and responded with a rout. Watson won the 2nd set, 6-2, and rolled in the 3rd, 6-1, to put the Colonels a point away from the clincher.
Carrie Foster was more than happy to seal the deal as she crushed her opponent in #5 singles without conceding a game. The 6-0, 6-0 win gave Centre the 4th team point and the overall win.
Sara Dunn was well on her way in #6 singles having won the 1st set, 6-1, when the match was abandoned after Centre clinched the team win.
The Colonels are next in action on Sunday against Campbellsville University. The action inside the Seabury Family Tennis Centre gets underway at 2:00pm.
