Danville, KY - Centre Women's Tennis took on Campbellsville on Sunday. The Colonels always face a tough test from a Tigers program that is always a contender in the NAIA. Campbellsville got the best of Centre on this day, taking the overall match 5-2.
Despite the overall result, Centre made positive strides that could bode well for the future. The Colonels started the day with a dominant win in #1 doubles as the pair of
Grace Williams and
Carlie Mitchell easily came away with a 6-2 win. In second doubles, the Colonels were again strong as
Kennedy Herring and
Natalie Black won 6-4 to clinch the team point for the gold and black.
In singles,
Grace Williams was again the strongest for the Colonels. She won in #1 action, 6-2, 6-1 for Centre's second overall point of the day. Campbellsville would bounce back and take the remainder of singles for the overall win.
Kennedy Herring fell in second singles, 2-6, 3-6.
Carlie Mitchell dropped a tough opening set in 3rd singles, 5-7, before falling in the second set, 0-6.
Carrie Foster and
Natalie Black were also taken out in straight sets.
Centre's best chance for another singles point came in #6 singles with
Sara Dunn in action. Dunn lost the first set, 3-6, before charging back in a dominant 6-1 win in the second. The match went to a deciding 3rd set tiebreak. The back-and-forth action ultimately went the other way as Campbellsville came away with an 11-9 win in the 3rd.
Karenna Thurman also competed in an exhibition singles match and won it, 8-6.
The Colonels now prepare for a short road trip against another NAIA opponent as they travel up to Georgetown College next Saturday starting at 1:00pm.
