Greg Ely was a two-sport standout at Centre on the gridiron and on the diamond. He immediately made a splash as a freshman in the fall of 1969. He led the Colonels’ CAC-championship football team in scoring as a halfback and was named to the all-conference team. Then in the spring, he batted .339 for the baseball team, which was good enough for second on the team and a spot on the all-conference team as a shortstop. By the time he graduated in 1973, Greg had helped lead the Colonels to 2 outright conference championships in football and one co-championship. He was a four-year starter and letterman at halfback and made the all-CAC team in his freshman, junior, and senior seasons. In baseball, he followed his stellar freshman season by leading the team in batting as a sophomore with a .398 average and another spot on the all-conference team. In his senior season, he helped lead the Colonels to a 15-8 record, their first winning season in several years, and to a conference championship, again being named to the all-conference team.
