Raymond "Ray" Burse was a standout football and track & field star throughout his Centre College career. He was named to the all-conference team in football and was the Most Valuable Player on offense in 1972. He won the Collegiate Athletic Conference high jump championship in 1973. As a sophomore, Burse was the CAC champion in the high hurdles. Also a top student, Burse was a Rhodes Scholar, who, while studying in England, became just the second African-American and sixth player from the United State to compete against Cambridge for the Oxford rugby team. Burse received his law degree from Harvard University and served as president of Kentucky State University from 1982-89.
