Maggie Prewitt de Saint Etienne, Class of 2012. Centre women’s basketball had enjoyed some great success in the 1980s and 90s, but the program announced its return to the national stage when Maggie Prewitt joined the team for the 2008-09 season. That year, she was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year and earned the first of four straight All-SCAC honors. Maggie was voted the SCAC Player of the Year in each of her final two seasons, was a Third Team All-American in 2011, and capped off her career with a First Team All-America nod in 2012.

That 2011-12 Centre women’s basketball team was a special squad, and Maggie was a driving force behind a group that set program records for wins in a season (26) and consecutive wins (16), going 26-4 and reaching as high as number 12 in the national polls. In that year’s NCAA Tournament, Centre hosted an opening round pod and Maggie recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to beat Guilford, and then scored 21 more points to help Centre overcome a 12-point halftime deficit to beat defending NCAA runner-up Washington University-St. Louis in the infamous “white-out” game.

Maggie Prewitt was a statistical marvel. She remains the all-time Centre women’s basketball program record holder in assists (536), steals (222), made three-pointers (160) and free throw percentage (83.5). Her 1,823 career points still rank third in program history behind Hall of Famers Shannon Collins and Susan Yates. On January 20, 2012 against Southwestern, Maggie made more Centre basketball history as she record the only triple double in Centre history – in men’s OR women’s basketball – with 14 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists.

Head coach Wendie Austin, also a Hall of Famer, said of her star point guard, “A sign of a truly GREAT player is that they make their teammates better around them and one of Maggie’s greatest gifts was that every day, she made everyone on the court better.  Maggie never cared who got the credit or recognition, she just wanted her teams to be successful. She was the first to celebrate the teams and everyone else’s individual successes. Truly a selfless super star in her own right, Maggie was the catalyst for our successes during her time at Centre.”

After graduating from Centre, Maggie joined the women’s basketball coaching staff at Transylvania, where she helped the team reach the NCAA tournament in 2015 and 2019. She also recruited a senior class that achieved a #2 national ranking during the 2022 season. It is through her rapport with Maggie Prewitt that one of those Transylvania players, Celia Kline, became a member of the Centre women’s basketball coaching staff in the summer of 2021.
