A winner of 12 varsity letters, Herbert Covington excelled in football, baseball and basketball. Covington was the quarterback for the Championship of the South game won by Centre over Georgia 14-7. He participated in the 6-0 football victory over Harvard in 1921 and became a Second Team All-American in 1922, 1923 and 1924. Covington is also remembered for six straight drop-kicked field goals in Centre's 1922 victory over the University of Louisville. He never missed a minute of play on the football field during his last three years at Centre. Known as "The Mayfield Flash," Covington played professional football after graduation and later became a championship golfer.
