Universally recognized as the driving force and spark behind the creation of a soccer team at Centre, John Boardman organized the first intercollegiate club team in the fall of 1971. During the 1971 and 1972 seasons, he served as both team captain and coach. He received the Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player awards and was named to the All-Tourney Team in the 1972 Kentucky Intercollegiate Soccer Association (KISA) tournament, leading Centre to a second-place finish in the College Division. Boardman scored 11 of Centre’s 12 goals in the 1973 KISA tournament, including 6 out of 7 goals in a shoot-out victory to clinch 5th place for Centre in the tournament. He led the team in scoring in each of his three seasons of play, scoring 33 documented goals during the 1973 season and 50 documented goals over his career at Centre. He went on to play semi-pro soccer and was a founding member of the Kentucky Kickers Soccer Club and co-owner of the Bluegrass Bandits professional team.
