Hall of Fame
A four-year letterman in tennis, Jim is one of the greatest players in the history of the Centre men’s tennis program. Jim was a three-time All-Conference selection, a four-time conference champion (three times at #1 doubles and once at #6 singles) and a member of Centre’s 1987 CAC Championship team.Â
As a senior in 1987, Jim was selected to compete in the NCAA Championships, where he became the only player in program history to win matches in both singles and doubles at an NCAA Tournament. His 50 singles victories and 45 doubles wins both rank second all-time for a career at Centre. His 17 doubles victories in 1986 are also the second most ever in a single season for a Centre player. Jim participated in 50 team match wins for the Colonels, a record that still stands 34 years later.Â
Â
Jim’s legacy extends far beyond that of his considerable accomplishments on the tennis court.  He served as a member of the Centre College Alumni Association Board from 2000-02 and has served faithfully and well as a member of the Centre Board of Trustees from 2003-21, including the last four years as Vice Chair. He also provided outstanding leadership for the College as he served as the Chairman of Centre’s Third Century Campaign. Even with all of his accomplishments and committee memberships as a member of the Board of Trustees, Jim has held a special place in his heart for the Centre tennis program. Through his generosity and kindness, the Seabury Tennis Center was established on Centre’s campus in 2019; Once a multi-use event center, thanks to Jim’s vision and dedication, Chowan Hall was transformed into a facility that features three courts, new lighting, an enhanced team room, and state-of-the-art facilities for the Centre men’s and women’s tennis teams.Â
